The naturally skilled self-taught painter artist DocWat (Jonathan Watson) was diagnosed by doctors that he wouldn’t live to see a second birthday having being born with Sickle Cell Anaemia, a common disease that most people of Caribbean descent carry, but does not always develop into the more severe form. Having received a 2nd opinion from Harley Street consultants in London, a more positive diagnosis meant there was more hope as long as a good health regime was adhered to and there were to be, no blood transfusions.
His SCA meant later in life he’d develop avascular necrosis of hips, knees and lower back, and a need for home oxygen to ease pain. He was advised by London consultants to try living in hotter temperatures i.e. the West Indies which would help in dealing with his illness, so his family moved there with the best interests of young Jonnie in their thoughts.
Everything the consultants said that he would fail to accomplish, he fought and challenged and proved them wrong. That was in 1975 and for 5/6 years, all seemed OK however he declined in health due to the extreme hot weather and it left his parents with no option but to return to UK.
Later on in his life, Jon spent 30 years working in the public and private sector, but with his poor health, it meant that this could not be sustained for his whole career. He was eventually signed off work due to his severe condition.
Whilst having new found time to reflect on his career, he discovered painting as a form of therapy and this is where he found a love and passion for Art. “My natural talent was calling me so I started creating pieces for my family, close friends, and commissioners or anyone!
His speciality was abstract in whatever i.e. portrait, anything bespoke, and commissions could be endless. Nothing was a challenge for DocWat.
Tragically, on 6 February 2020 after another period of illness, Jon passed away aged 51, leaving behind his wife and 3 beautiful children. His legacy will live on through them, as well as his magnificent art.
